Tampa, Fla., April 28, 2006—The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced today that SABESP, Sao Paulo, Brazil, was named the recipient of the 2006 GITA Excellence Award for the water/waste water sector. The award recognizes the dedication, insight, and high degree of initiative in the outstanding application of geospatial technology. The award was presented during the Opening Session of GITA’s Annual Conference 29, held April 23-26, 2006, at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa.
To assist a population of approximately 17 million inhabitants in a 1.700 km2 of urban area, SABESP defined, four years ago, the use of a GIS application. It was named SIGNOS and consisted of an enterprise system, integrated to commercial and operational legacy systems.
Their main results today are related to physical losses reduction and planning requested services. SIGNOS is unique in its integrated approach (legacy systems and graphic data), which provide suitable interfaces and view and maps, allowing new methodologies of analysis that are saving many labor hours.
