Wadwani Named Recipient of GITA’s
Distinguished Service Award

Tampa, Fla., April 28, 2006—The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced today that Ashok Wadwani of Houston, Texas, has been named the recipient of GITA’s 2006 Distinguished Service Award. The award is bestowed on individuals whose extraordinary personal contributions have added to the success of GITA. The presentation was made during GITA’s Annual Conference 29, held April 23-26, 2006, at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla.

Wadwani was a founding member of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter and has served as a chapter officer for the past eight years. He has also served on several GITA committees. He was also the chairman of the GITA Educational Outreach Programs.

He served on the advisory board for GIS education curriculum programs at the North Harris Montgomery Community College and San Jacinto Community College Systems and helped secure GPS/GIS equipment to assist recent hurricane relief efforts.

Wadwani has conducted several GIS/GPS workshops on behalf of GITA in several states and in other countries, including Costa Rica, Canada, Thailand, India, and Dubai. He is a strong supporter of “changing attitudes about latitudes” and spreading the word about geospatial technology to students, educators, and the general public.

"This is an award that means a lot to me because it recognizes a lot of students and educators who I have shared my knowledge with and who have shared their knowledge with me on nontraditional GIS topics such as anthropology, archeology, political science, economics, and other areas," Wadwani said.
