The City of Cleveland is implementing one of the largest enterprisewide GIS programs in the United States.The GIS will be used to document and manage data for the city’s water, sewer, and electric utility assets and provide basic GIS functionality to all city departments.This case study was a snapshot in time of projected project returns and is designed to demonstrate a methodology of cost justifying continued funding of the city’s GIS program at key decision points.

This presentation will address coordination and collaboration in a large multi-agency project. Washington State DOT was able to leverage relationships with federal, state, regional, and municipal agencies to provide a common transportation network for the state—emphasizing respect for individual business needs and usability of ROI results to make the business case for funding. Strategic and long-term benefits will be discussed as well as measurable and more immediate benefits.

For more than 25 years, utilities in the City of Edmonton and their partners have been sharing geospatial data. EPCOR Utilities Inc. has been part of this unique geospatial data-sharing arrangement since its inception. Over the years, more applications were added to take advantage of the detailed geospatial information. An example of this is an application that automated the merging of GIS data layers and the addition of standard notes to create initial construction drawings. This presentation will detail the technical process of how EPCOR was able to leverage the shared information to realize an immediate return on investment.

This presentation will cover the AM/FM/GIS project currently being implemented at Progress Energy to upgrade and consolidate the current applications. It will present a brief history of the project, and it will present the phased project methodology and the importance of a solid ROI on the business case. The presentation will also cover hard and soft benefits and how they influenced the ROI.

  • Look at some of the challenges in managing a GIS project in anticipation of a post implementation review.
  • Learn how AwwaRF/GITA ROI study investigations showed achieved ROI after the fact.

In 2002 TELUS Corporation had just merged two provincial ILECs into one national company. Engineering needed to integrate systems and practices in order to survive imminent downsizing. The challenge was to secure funding for such an expensive initiative at a time of fierce competition for capital. Could a business case be built that identified benefits radical enough to attract support yet still deliver on its promises? GITA’s ROI Case Study investigations reveal just what was achieved.
